Classroom Updates

Social Studies (Mrs. Stocking) – Ancient Greece here we come! Students are being put into specific city-states this week. At the end of the unit, after learning everything they can about Greece, your student will be participating in their own Olympics. Yes, it is true. After 6th grade 2009-2010, your student can say that they are an Olympian!

Science (Ms. McFarland) - is working with your students now. What? Couldn't hear me? Well, ask your student how sound works because that is what they are learning about now!

Writing (Mrs. Workman) - We are creating an interesting word wall full of just that: interesting words! Also, students will be writing their own fable this week using strong words to help make their writing more unique.

Literacy – We have begun working in our Book Club groups.  Books we are currently reading: The One-Eyed Giant, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, The Roman Mysteries, The Sisters Grimm, Chasing Vermeer, and The Shakespeare Stealer . Please take the chance to ask your child about the book they are reading.

Spelling – Students are invited to practice their spelling words at home or online at spellingcity.com (click “Find a List” and search “Amy Workman”) The spelling list for the upcoming week will be labeled "Unit 2 Week 4 ". Encourage your child to get a headstart and begin working on their words!

Below are some websites that we use in class and some that have useful information regarding subjects we are learning about. Spend some time looking around and furthering your education at home!

Spelling City   Math Games
Pearson Math   Online Writing Lab
World History   Writing Prompts

School is off to a great start! As always, please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or comments!

Thank you!

Mrs. Workman

Where in the World is Mrs. Waffenschmidt?

Read the paragraph below. In that paragraph, Mrs. Workman's favorite adventurer, Mrs. Waffenschmidt, offers clues about the place she is visiting today. Use those clues to help you figure out where in the world Mrs. Waffenschmidt is. Since this is an activity you are doing with your Literacy Checklist, be sure to type your answer on your checklist!

Mrs. Waffenschmidt here! Today I'm standing on the second floor of what was called the word's greatest engineering marvel when it was constructed in 1889. You can take an elevator up, but I walked up the iron stairs to the second floor. It was pretty scary to see the ground below as I climbed higher and higher. The huge wrought-iron structure was designed by Alexandre Gustave... Ooops! I almost told you his last name, which would give away the answer since this tower is named for him. I thought of treating myself to lunch at the very fancy restaurant on the second floor of this structure, which is named for a science fiction writer who called this country his home. Instead, I saved some money and settled for just getting a soda at the snack stand.

Can you name where I am and in which country this tower can be found? Can you name the famous writer from this country, too?
