Principal's Letter to Patrons

August 5, 2009

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that summer is almost over. I am thrilled to have an opportunity to work with you and your children and I am looking forward to having them back in school.

Our Back-to-School Open House is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. for students in first – sixth grades. Please go directly to your child’s classroom.

Kindergarten students can come at the following times:

Mrs. Werner’s and Mrs. Whitaker’s morning classes are invited to come from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Mrs. Porter’s and Mrs. Whitaker’s afternoon classes are invited come from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

The first day of school is on August 19 for first – sixth grade students. SEP Conferences for first – sixth graders will be held from August 19 – August 28. School will be in session from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. during conferences. Please be sure to schedule a time with your child’s teacher at Back-to-School Night.  Students in first – sixth grades begin their regular hours Monday, August 31.

Regular School Hours are M-Th 8:30am-3:15pm and Fridays 8:30 am-1:00pm

Kindergarten students will meet individually with their teachers August 19 – August 28. Be sure to pick up the letter showing your scheduled time from your child’s teacher at Back-to-School Night. Regular kindergarten sessions begin on Monday, August 31.

We love your children and want their day to get off to a good start. Every Moment Counts! Please plan on having your children arrive at school by 8:20 a.m. so they have time to go to their classrooms, say hi to their friends, put their things away, and be in their seats ready to learn by 8:30 a.m.

Scooters and bikes will be parked on the bike racks during school hours. Because many children ride scooters to school, there isn’t enough space for them in the classrooms. If your child is planning on riding a scooter or bike to school, you will want to get a lock so it can be secured. Please do not bring skateboards to school; we don’t have space to store them. For the safety of all children, scooters, bikes, etc. cannot be used on school property from 7:50 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Students are to walk with their equipment when they come to school property. I appreciate your support in helping all children be safe.

The school lunch price is $1.75 and breakfast is $1.25 for students. Breakfast is served from 7:50-8:15 a.m. Free and reduced lunch applications are included with the school mailing and also available in the office (applications need to be submitted each year). If you want to apply, complete the form and submit it to the office promptly. You will be responsible for paying for your child’s lunch/breakfast or send meals from home until it is approved. You will be notified when it is approved.

Other items in the school mailing include:

• A letter from PAWS

• Notice for Directory Information and Notice of Rights under The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

• School Fees Notice for Families of Children in Kindergarten through Sixth Grades

The following items will be sent home with you and your child at SEP Conferences:

• Student Annual School Emergency and Health Information – Please return it to Wasatch as soon as possible (yellow form).

• Family Handbook – This acquaints you with Wasatch Elementary and our many outstanding programs, policies, and procedures.

• Provo School District’s Policy and Procedures on Orderly Conduct, Safe Schools, and Substance Abuse, a booklet that contains information about behaviors that will not be tolerated in Provo Schools.

Please help your child understand the importance of making good choices. Please call or come see me if you have questions or concerns. For more information, please visit our school web site at: www.wasatch.provo.edu. To subscribe to the Wasatch Newsletter by email, please call the school with your email address to be added to the list. We all want to make sure that your child has a great educational experience at Wasatch Elementary. Working in partnership with you, this will happen!

Sincerely,

Colleen Densley, Principal
